In a significant development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah authorized legal proceedings against the individuals linked to the untimely death of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. This approval, granted under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), permits Assam to file formal charges, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The move marks a pivotal step in the legal process, ensuring the case can proceed in court. Sarma conveyed the state's unwavering commitment to justice, pledging to submit the charge sheet by December. Zubeen Garg, revered for his music, passed away during a visit to Singapore for the North East India Festival.

Following multiple FIRs, an SIT was formed, leading to arrests of seven individuals, including key festival organizers. The Assam cabinet is pushing for a fast-track court to expedite the trial, aiming to address public concerns over the pace of justice. A Special Public Prosecutor, dedicated solely to this case, will oversee proceedings from charge sheet filing through the trial phase.
