Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh revealed plans to establish a Weavers' Service Centre in Meghalaya, contingent on land allocation by the state government. Currently, the northeast has only one such facility in Guwahati, making this a significant development for the region's artisans.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Integrated Textile & Tourism Centre (ITTC) in Nongpoh, where Singh also launched 'EKTA' Meghalaya. The proposed WSC aims to provide comprehensive support in design, technical, and market areas for weavers, further enhancing the region's textile capabilities.
Plans include modernizing weaving technologies and promoting natural fibers. Singh emphasized expanding Muga sericulture as a means to boost farmers' incomes and reinforce India's position as a leading silk producer. A meeting in Guwahati among all textile ministers will further discuss northeastern textile agendas.
