Javed Akhtar, the renowned lyricist and writer, shared insights into the concept of secularism at the 19th Jaipur Literature Festival, describing it as a 'way of life' ingrained over time rather than through formal courses. He argued that true secular values thrive naturally within a society.
Akhtar recounted his childhood in an agnostic household where religion rarely featured in daily life, influencing his secular beliefs. He admired his grandmother's refusal to impose religious teachings, appreciating her sensibilities. Her perspectives left a lasting impression on him, shaping his views on secularism.
Beyond secularism, Akhtar humorously addressed generational criticisms, noting they've existed for centuries, sharing anecdotes from the film industry to illustrate changing times. The festival, featuring luminaries like Banu Mushtaq, Vishwanathan Anand, and Stephen Fry, will conclude on January 19.
