West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced the creation of the world's tallest Mahakal avatar of Lord Shiva at a new temple complex in Matigara, Siliguri. The foundation stone was laid amid the presence of leaders from diverse religious communities.

The 216-feet-high structure will include a 108-feet bronze sculpture, part of a 17.41-acre complex named 'Mahakal Mahatirtha,' expected to be completed in approximately two-and-a-half years. After public opening, the Mahakal temple trust will manage operations, accommodating up to 100,000 pilgrims daily.

Banerjee also announced a new 'international convention centre' in Siliguri to bolster business in north Bengal. Additionally, on the occasion, she inaugurated social service projects, including school buildings and creches for tea garden workers' children.
