Filmmaker Shawn Levy is set to helm ''Somewhere Out There'', a new original sci-fi film from streaming service Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has acquired the spec script, written by Max Taxe, in a competitive bidding war. In addition to directing, Levy will also produce the project alongside Dan Levine under his banner 21 Laps Entertainment. The film is described as emotionally driven in the vein of ''Arrival'' and Levy's own ''The Adam Project''. The story follows a grieving father who, following the loss of his wife, transmits a message into outer space -- only to receive a reply from the unknown. Levy directorial credits include the global blockbuster ''Deadpool and Wolverine'', which grossed over USD 1.08 billion worldwide. He has also produced acclaimed titles such as Netflix hit show ''Stranger Things'' and ''All the Light We Cannot See''. The director recently completed production on ''Star Wars: Starfighter'', featuring an ensemble cast including Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth and Aaron Pierre. The movie is slated for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027. Screenwriter Taxe previously collaborated with 21 Laps on the screenplay ''Ripple'', which has Jack Quaid attached to star. His writing credits include HBO Max's ''Moonshot'', which starred Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse.
