Pope Leo Urges Spanish Bishops to Act on Clergy Abuse
Pope Leo, during his visit to Spain, urged Catholic bishops to listen to abuse survivors and offer reparations, highlighting the Church's commitment to safeguard vulnerable individuals. Despite promises to meet victims, some survivor groups felt excluded. Prominent activists demand more from the Church to address decades-long clerical abuse issues.
Pope Leo called on Spain's Catholic bishops to hear the voices of clergy abuse survivors and provide reparations during his recent trip. This marked the Pope's first direct acknowledgment of scandals that have severely impacted the Church's reputation.
The Pope emphasized the need for a 'determined commitment' from the Church to improve safeguarding measures and foster a safe environment for children and vulnerable individuals. This comes in the wake of a 2023 report by Spain's human rights ombudsman estimating widespread clerical abuse over the decades.
Despite plans for a papal meeting with victims, some survivor groups feel overlooked, accusing the Church of attempting to improve its image without substantial action. Activists demand stronger accountability and support from the Church, as well as comprehensive reparations for those affected by abuse.
