Atlanta Hawks starting forward John Collins will miss the start of the season due to an injury to his left ankle.

The club said Collins underwent a non-surgical procedure on Monday after an MRI exam the previous week revealed mild inflammation and soreness. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Collins received an injection.

The Hawks said Collins will be re-evaluated on Oct. 22.

Atlanta opens the season Wednesday when it visits the New York Knicks.

Collins departed a preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Oct. 5 due to ankle soreness. He hasn't played since.

Collins averaged 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds in 74 games (26 starts) last season while earning NBA All-Rookie Second Team honours.

Atlanta will also likely be without centre Dewayne Dedmon (ankle) when the season begins. Dedmon averaged 10.0 points and 7.9 rebounds in 62 games (46 starts) last season.
