Gas Industry Pioneer CR Prasad Passes Away at 83

CR Prasad, former chairman and managing director of GAIL (India) Ltd, has passed away at the age of 83. Known for his transformative leadership, he played a pivotal role in making GAIL a key player in India's gas sector. Industry leaders mourn his loss.

CR Prasad, former chairman and managing director of the state-owned gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd, has passed away at the age of 83.

According to a LinkedIn post by GAIL, Prasad passed away on Saturday. The post did not specify the cause of death.

Prasad joined GAIL as Director (Planning) in 1994, eventually becoming CMD in 1996, a role he held until his retirement in 2001. He was instrumental in transforming GAIL into a major player in the gas value chain through both forward and backward integration.

Industry leaders expressed their condolences, highlighting his visionary leadership and significant contributions to the sector. Suresh P Manglani, CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd, referred to him as a pious soul and a strong supporter, while RG Rajan, former chairman of Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd, commended his strategic foresight and innovative thinking.

Prasad's tenure saw the implementation of crucial projects, including the Pata petrochemical complex and the HBJ Upgradation. Former colleagues from ONGC and other industry bodies also mourned the loss, emphasizing his impact on India's oil and gas industry.
