General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff, emphasized on Thursday the enduring significance of the Kargil War and its lessons for future generations. Speaking at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the conflict, General Chauhan stated, "War is a crucial political and military event with the power to alter a nation's destiny, its people, and its ideology. Therefore, the stories of all losses need to be recalled and retold repeatedly."

The CDS stressed that the sacrifices and bravery of soldiers during the Kargil War should continue to inspire young people to join the Indian Armed Forces. "While recalling the war's memories is vital, it is equally important to learn from its aftermath and avoid repeating mistakes. All national power instruments dealing with security and defense must heed these lessons. It's been 25 years since we combated Pakistani intruders on icy heights, and understanding the right lessons from this war is crucial," he remarked.

General Chauhan highlighted the Kargil War's demonstration of the need for a robust and responsive defense strategy. "The conflict emphasized vigilance and preparedness to safeguard our borders and underscored the importance of public and international diplomacy. As the first limited war fought in the subcontinent post-nuclear capability demonstration, it presents critical lessons about the interplay between limited war, full-scale conflict, and nuclear deterrence," he explained.

He also noted the Kargil War's unique role in capturing national attention and imagination. "The conflict brought the war into our bedrooms, highlighting the importance of free and open media in India, as opposed to state-sponsored media across the border. This media difference had a significant impact during the Kargil War and will play an even larger role in future conflicts with ongoing battles to shape global perceptions.
