India Enhances Defense Capabilities with New Airfields in Lakshadweep

India has approved plans to build new military airfields in Lakshadweep to monitor Chinese activities and enhance its defense reach. The plan includes a new airbase on Minicoy Island and expanding the airfield on Agatti Island.

India has taken a significant step forward in bolstering its defense capabilities by approving plans to construct military airfields in the Lakshadweep island territories. This decision comes in response to the increasing Chinese activity in the region.

According to defense sources, the Central government greenlit the proposals during a high-level meeting on Thursday. The plan, spearheaded by the Department of Military Affairs, involves building a new airbase on Minicoy Island and expanding the existing airfield on Agatti Island in the Arabian Sea.

The new dual-purpose airfields will serve both military and commercial purposes, accommodating various fighter and transport aircraft, as well as long-range drones. This development aims to provide the Indian forces with a strategic advantage, particularly as the Chinese Navy intensifies its presence in the Indian Ocean Region and strengthens its ties with the Pakistan Navy.

The Indian Air Force will lead the project, which will establish a military conclave to be utilized by all three branches of the defense forces and the Indian Coast Guard. Initially suggested by the Indian Coast Guard, the Minicoy airstrip proposal has now become a reality.

Beyond military benefits, the Minicoy airport is set to enhance surveillance capabilities in the Arabian Sea and boost regional tourism. The Minicoy islands' proximity to the Maldives, being just about 50 miles away, adds strategic importance to the project.
