The Central Government has officially given the green light to Kerala's request to rename Kochuveli and Nemom railway stations, according to an official press release from the State Ministry of Minority Welfare, Sports, and Railways. Kochuveli Railway Station will now be called Thiruvananthapuram North, while Nemom Railway Station will be renamed Thiruvananthapuram South.

The approval followed the Kerala State Government's request, with formal communication received from the Ministry of Home Affairs. This renaming is part of a broader strategy to develop these stations into satellite terminals for Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, aiming for better management of increased train services.

Kerala Minister V. Abdurahiman, who oversees railways in the state, had been actively advocating for this change with the Central Railway Ministry and senior officials. Located 9 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram Central, both Nemom and Kochuveli stations currently manage a significant volume of long-distance trains and passengers.

The renaming is expected to boost passenger numbers and revenue, as Kochuveli's unfamiliar name had previously led to it being overlooked by travelers. This change aims to improve the recognition and utilization of these stations. With six platforms and upcoming coach care facilities, Kochuveli is set for further growth. The renaming is also anticipated to enhance terminal development at Nemom.
