Haryana Government Shuts Down Internet in Sirsa Amid Tensions

In a bid to prevent unrest, the Haryana Government has temporarily suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Sirsa district. This move comes ahead of the selection ceremony for a new Dera leader and follows the controversial death of Sant Bahadur Singh Vakil Sahab.

The Government of Haryana announced a temporary suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Sirsa district on Wednesday. This preventive measure will be in place until 23:59 on Thursday, August 8, to prevent potential disruptions and maintain public order.

According to the Department of Home Affairs of Haryana Government, there is an apprehension that misuse of internet services could lead to public unrest, damage to property, and disturbance of peace. The notice pointed out the high potential for tension and public disturbances arising from the spread of inflammatory material and false rumours.

Bulk SMS services for banking and mobile recharge, along with voice calls, will remain operable in the district. The suspension is particularly aimed at preventing the spread of rumours following the controversial death of Sant Bahadur Singh Vakil Sahab of Dera Balochistani in Jagmalwali village. The ceremony for selecting his successor is scheduled for August 8, adding to the tension. The internet shutdown is a precautionary measure to maintain public order during this period of unrest.
