Congress Criticizes Government Over Rising Counterfeit Note Concerns

The Congress accuses the government of failing to curb counterfeit currency, despite 2016 demonetisation efforts. They claim counterfeit higher-value notes are increasing, questioning the effectiveness of the demonetisation policy. The Congress on Friday claimed that counterfeit currency is proliferating once again, dismissing the government's assertion that fewer counterfeit notes have been detected overall as an 'eyewash.'

The opposition party argued that counterfeiting has surged in higher-value notes, particularly those introduced after the 2016 demonetisation policy.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, questioned the achievements of the demonetisation drive, pointing out significant increases in fake Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes since the policy's implementation.
