Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for leading a protest against her own government, describing it as a sign of the TMC government's weakness in West Bengal. Paswan questioned whether Banerjee's actions were meant to assure justice or to instill fear among the public. 'If the Chief Minister protests against her own administration, it indicates a lack of control over her state's machinery, leading to an atmosphere of anarchy,' Paswan stated.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of 'destroying evidence' related to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He criticized leaders of the INDIA bloc for not responding to the incident. 'Instead of catching the culprits who vandalized RG Kar Medical College, they are targeting citizens, doctors, and opponents. The TMC government is erasing evidence,' Poonawalla claimed. He also questioned the withdrawal of an order to transfer 43 doctors, suggesting it was done to intimidate them.

Amid ongoing protests by students and junior doctors across states, including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai, the West Bengal Governor's office urged medical colleges to increase security, particularly for women professionals. Additionally, football fans protested near Salt Lake Stadium, leading to the cancellation of a Durand Cup match. Security was tightened around RG Kar Medical College with the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, effective from August 18, as tensions remain high.
