Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his intent to block Nippon Steel's proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel, while also moving to rescind pollution regulations enacted by the Biden administration for power plants. Trump first indicated his opposition to the deal in February.

Trump is scheduled to address workers in York, Pennsylvania, emphasizing that if elected, he will prevent Japan from purchasing U.S. Steel, according to prepared remarks released by his campaign.

Following the news of Trump's statements, shares in U.S. Steel fell by 3.5%. In March, President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of U.S. Steel remaining domestically owned and operated. In April, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced stringent pollution rules targeting the electricity sector, aiming to cut over 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2047.
