Mumbai's Nair Hospital Reports Eighth GBS Fatality Amid Pune Outbreak

A 53-year-old has died of Guillain-Barre Syndrome at Mumbai's Nair Hospital, raising Maharashtra's GBS death toll to eight. Authorities have noted 192 suspected cases, with 172 confirmed. A significant number of cases have been traced to Pune and surrounding areas, prompting water supply plant closures.

Mumbai's Nair Hospital confirmed the death of a 53-year-old from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), bringing the fatality count to eight in Maharashtra, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The state's health department reports 192 suspected GBS cases, 172 of which are confirmed. The majority hail from Pune and its surrounding areas, prompting concern among health officials.

Authorities have identified Pune as a critical area, with 132 cases emerging from Pune Municipal Corporation and adjacent regions, while 29 cases were reported from Pimpri Chinchwad and 28 from Pune Rural. As of now, 104 patients have been discharged, while 50 remain in ICU and 20 on ventilators.

In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation has closed 30 private water supply plants after discovering unsafe water conditions, including excessive Escherichia coli levels. This move comes after water from these facilities was implicated in the spread of GBS.

The Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, held discussions with Maharashtra's health officials to assess and enhance the current control measures for the GBS outbreak.
