Auckland’s transformative City Rail Link (CRL) project has achieved a crucial milestone with the successful completion of the first test train journey through the full length of the tunnel. Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Minister for Auckland Simeon Brown have hailed this as a significant step forward in delivering an efficient and modern rail system for New Zealand’s largest city.

Originally initiated under the previous National Government, CRL is set to double Auckland’s rail capacity, significantly easing congestion and enabling faster, more reliable journeys across the city. The project, scheduled to open in 2026, will turn Britomart from a terminus into a through-station, improving connectivity across the rail network and cutting travel times for thousands of commuters daily.

First Test Train Navigates the 3.45km Underground Route

The first test train journeyed 3.45km last night from Britomart Station to Mt Eden, marking a historic moment as the first train to travel on a brand-new rail line in the city since 2012. This follows the recent energization of overhead lines in the tunnel, providing power for train operations.

The initial testing phase focused on critical technical assessments, including tunnel clearance, power supply, and signaling systems. Over the coming weeks, further rigorous testing will be conducted, covering essential safety and operational components such as brake performance, emergency recovery procedures, tunnel ventilation, lighting, communications, and security systems. Metro train drivers and station staff will also begin hands-on training to prepare for full-scale operations.

Auckland’s Future on the Right Track

Minister Simeon Brown emphasized that CRL will be a game-changer for Auckland’s public transport system. “The first train through the CRL tunnel is a major achievement. Once operational, CRL will cut travel times and make public transport a more attractive and viable option for thousands of Aucklanders.”

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the dedication of everyone involved in bringing CRL to this stage. “Auckland ratepayers and the government have invested heavily in this project, and I am committed to seeing it completed. While there have been challenges along the way, today’s milestone proves that we are making real progress. We can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

On Track for a 2026 Opening

With significant testing and system verifications ahead, the CRL project is now transitioning from a construction focus to an operational railway. Transport Minister Chris Bishop highlighted the enthusiasm of Auckland commuters: “Tens of thousands of people are eager to experience the benefits of CRL, and today marks an exciting step toward making that a reality.”

As Auckland’s most ambitious transport infrastructure project moves closer to completion, residents can look forward to a faster, more efficient, and more connected city. The countdown to 2026 is well and truly underway.
