Mamata Banerjee Criticizes 'Mrityu Kumbh' Planning

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticized the organization of Maha Kumbh 2025, calling it 'Mrityu Kumbh' due to poor planning leading to deadly stampedes. She highlighted a disparity in facilities for the rich and poor and demanded better arrangements to prevent future tragedies.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the planning and management of the forthcoming Maha Kumbh 2025, dubbing it 'Mrityu Kumbh' due to the lack of effective arrangements. Addressing the Legislative Assembly, she underscored respect for the sanctity of Maha Kumbh and the revered Ganga, while condemning organizers for the chaos and deadly stampedes at Prayagraj on January 29 and New Delhi Railway Station on February 15.

Emphasizing her concerns about the disparity in provisions for different social classes, Banerjee pointed out that while the affluent can access luxurious accommodations for up to Rs 1 lakh, the underprivileged face a lack of facilities. "This neglect is unacceptable for an event of such importance," she asserted, calling for immediate corrective measures.

Meanwhile, former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav dismissed the significance of Maha Kumbh, questioning its value. His reaction came following the tragic stampedes, which claimed over 18 lives. A two-member committee, including Narsingh Deo and Pankaj Gangwar, has been appointed to scrutinize the incidents, marking a pivotal step towards accountability and prevention.
