Embattled businessman Vijay Mallya is challenging bankruptcy proceedings in London, arguing that he has overpaid Indian banks. This claim follows a statement by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, acknowledging the recovery of significant funds from Mallya. In response, Mallya has instructed his lawyers to seek an annulment of the bankruptcy order.
Justice Anthony Mann, after hearing three related appeals, has reserved judgment in the high-profile case. These appeals involved a consortium of banks, including the State Bank of India, seeking repayment of a massive debt tied to Mallya's defunct Kingfisher Airlines. Mallya's new legal team asserts that the banks have recouped more than what was owed.
In the context of a separate extradition case, Mallya, continuously denied any wrongdoing and maintains the stance that Indian banks are unfairly pursuing the same debt in both India and the UK. In the meantime, the businessman remains on bail while a confidential asylum-related issue is resolved in the UK.
