Euro Surges Amid Ukraine Ceasefire and U.S.-Canada Trade Tensions
The euro reached a five-month high following Ukraine's acceptance of a 30-day ceasefire deal, while U.S.-Canada trade tensions saw dollar fluctuations. Increased European defense spending and ceasefire prospects boost the euro. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar weakens against major peers as trade and growth concerns impact the currency.
The euro experienced a significant rise, reaching a five-month high on Tuesday, after Ukraine accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal. This development has been perceived as positive for the euro, fueled further by expectations of increased defense spending in Germany.
Conversely, the U.S. dollar displayed initial strength against the Canadian dollar, achieving a one-week high. However, the introduction of additional tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian imports led the dollar to weaken subsequently. This move was in response to Ontario’s tariffs on electricity exports to the U.S.
Trade and growth concerns continue to exert pressure on the U.S. dollar against other major currencies, resulting in Wall Street's main indexes closing down on Tuesday. The dollar index fell, marking its seventh consecutive loss. Analysts at Standard Chartered highlighted vulnerabilities in U.S. equities and rising German yields.
