Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has unveiled plans to establish two areca nut processing plants in the state, aimed at alleviating challenges faced by local areca nut growers. The initiative comes with a Rs 7.43 crore fund sanctioned by the North Eastern Council (NEC).

The processing units will be set up in Chemphai within the Kolasib district and Zamuang in the Mamit district, both strategically located to enhance market access. The chief minister emphasized that these facilities will enable farmers to produce value-added products from their areca nuts.

An ongoing issue has been illegal imports of areca nuts from Myanmar, affecting local sellers' profits. Lalduhoma stated that efforts to curb this smuggling are underway, complemented by support through programs like the 'Bana Kaih' scheme and the CM special package.
