India's Sweet Surge: Sugar Exports to Record Highs

India has exported 4.24 lakh tonnes of sugar by April 2024-25 marketing year, with Somalia receiving the largest share. AISTA predicts 8 lakh tonnes of total exports out of 10 lakh permitted, urging a rise in sugar's selling price and ethanol's procurement price to match costs.

India's sugar exports reached 4.24 lakh tonnes by April in the 2024-25 marketing year, according to AISTA. The leading recipient of Indian sugar was Somalia, which imported 92,758 tonnes.

The sugar marketing year runs from October to September, with a total of 10 lakh tonnes permitted for export this season. AISTA forecasts 8 lakh tonnes in exports by year-end.

The trade body seeks an increase in the minimum selling price of sugar, paired with a 10% increase in ethanol's procurement price to adjust for rising production costs.
