The postmortem examination of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar commenced at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, after a delay of nine days owing to the absence of family consent. The late officer's wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, provided the crucial formal approval and identified the body, thereby initiating the process.
The examination was carried out by a team of senior forensic experts, along with histology specialists and medical officers, all under stringent supervision. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Chandigarh Police was present throughout, ensuring transparency in this high-profile probe. Every aspect of the procedure was meticulously recorded on video, following established norms for sensitive cases.
Officials highlighted the need for the postmortem to ascertain the precise cause of Y Puran Kumar's death and to corroborate the forensic evidence collected from the scene. His demise, characterized by a gunshot wound, had left significant pieces of evidence, including his service weapon and a so-called final note. Meanwhile, Amneet P Kumar accused senior police officials in Haryana of discrimination and harassment, demanding an FIR. The SIT, composed of elite officers, is actively investigating, with the postmortem results expected to significantly illuminate the case, which remains under intense public and bureaucratic scrutiny.
