In response to persistent rainfall, schools in Madurai district have been closed on Monday, officials have announced. District Collector Praveenkumar made this decision early this morning, prioritizing the safety of students and aiming to prevent any inconvenience brought about by the severe weather conditions.
Officials reported that several areas within the district have faced continuous rainfall since last night, leading to waterlogging in low-lying regions and causing disruptions to local transportation. The district administration is vigilantly monitoring the weather situation in coordination with the meteorological department to ensure timely updates and actions.
According to the weather forecast, IMD scientist Naresh Kumar highlighted the formation of a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea, which is moving westwards. This development is expected to bring more rainfall to the Andaman Islands over the next two days and heavy precipitation to Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and Kerala. This weather pattern is typical during the northeast monsoon, also known as the winter monsoon, occurring between October and December in southern India.
The district administration stated that further decisions regarding the reopening of schools will depend on the evolving weather conditions as they continue to manage the impact of the rains.
