In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Police apprehended more than 15 individuals following a public demonstration against escalating pollution levels at the city's India Gate. The protestors defied orders to disperse, allegedly utilizing chilli spray against officers and obstructing traffic, as confirmed by official reports.
DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla expressed that this incident marked the first-ever use of chilli spray against police personnel in such protests. Protesters attempted to breach police barricades, demanding action on pollution while hindering urgent medical access. The resulting altercation saw multiple officers injured and receiving treatment.
As visuals emerged of protesters brandishing posters of deceased Maoist leader Madvi Hidma, the event underscored the tension in the air. Meanwhile, Delhi remains shrouded in a thick smog, with the Air Quality Index consistently hitting 'very poor' and 'severe' levels across the city, highlighting the pressing environmental issues faced by residents.
