Prada Collaborates with Indian Artisans for Limited-Edition Sandal Collection
Prada partners with Indian artisans to create a limited-edition sandal collection inspired by traditional Indian footwear, blending Indian craftsmanship and Italian technology. Scheduled for release in 2026, this initiative follows backlash over cultural appropriation and aims to preserve traditional skills and support local artisans.
Prada has announced a collaboration with Indian artisans to produce a limited-edition collection of sandals, blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with Italian technology. Each pair will retail for approximately 800 euros ($930), marking a significant move to turn accusations of cultural appropriation into a partnership that supports local artisans.
The Italian luxury brand is set to manufacture 2,000 pairs of sandals in Maharashtra and Karnataka, under agreements with the Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation and Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation. The collaboration initiates training programs and opportunities for artisans to hone their craft at Prada's Academy in Italy, with the collection expected to launch in February 2026 globally.
This venture follows public criticism Prada faced after debuting designs similar to Kolhapuri chappals in Milan. The plan aims to increase income for artisans, attract new talent to the trade, and preserve cultural heritage. While Prada plans to reinforce its brand in India, there are no current plans for new retail outlets, reflecting a cautious yet optimistic entry strategy into the burgeoning Indian luxury market.
