In the ongoing municipal elections across 29 municipalities in Maharashtra, voter turnout appears to be disappointing. By 11:30 a.m., only 17.41% of eligible voters had cast their ballots, according to data from the State Election Commission. Notably, by 9:30 a.m. in Mumbai, turnout was a mere 7.12%.

As per official figures, out of 1,03,44,315 registered voters, a mere 7,36,996 votes have been cast. The turnout disparity between genders is stark, with 4,54,539 men voting compared to just 2,82,433 women. Political leaders have taken to social media and other platforms urging citizens to participate, highlighting the importance of civic engagement.

Criticism has been aimed particularly at the higher income demographics. Former Rajya Sabha MP, Subhash Chandra, called out this segment for their tendency to complain without taking the responsibility of voting. Meanwhile, voters and officials have reported logistical issues, including malfunctioning election commission websites and an absence of voting slips, which have created confusion.
