In a dramatic weather shift, Khatima was hit by heavy rain, hail, and powerful winds on Saturday afternoon. The storm brought temporary relief from the heat but resulted in the destruction of about three tin sheds and several temporary structures, leading to significant resident losses and posing threats to crops.
The State Emergency Operations Centre reacted by issuing guidelines to all districts, following the India Meteorological Department's forecasts. An Orange Alert has been declared for May 4 and 5 for Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar, anticipating severe weather conditions. Additionally, an Orange Alert for May 5 is in effect for Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, with a Yellow Alert active until May 6 for other areas.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman emphasized that districts must remain vigilant. Officials are directed to regulate trekking, enhance monitoring of vulnerable zones, and have rescue teams prepared. Key agencies have been instructed to ensure quick road clearances if blocked. Schools are tasked with ensuring student safety, and helicopter services in Kedarnath Dham and surrounding areas are suspended due to poor weather, prioritizing pilgrims' safety.
The administration has advised travelers to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to guidelines for a safe pilgrimage experience.
