Methane Menace: The World's Landfill Giant Confronts Climate Change
The Lomas Los Colorados landfill near Santiago, Chile, is identified as one of the top global sites for methane emissions, raising climate concerns. While criticized for environmental impact, it partially mitigates greenhouse gas emissions by converting methane into biogas, supporting nearby power generation. Experts suggest improved waste management solutions.
A landfill near Santiago, Chile, has been identified as a major source of methane emissions, according to a UN study. Dubbed Lomas Los Colorados, the site tops the list of global methane emitters, raising alarm about its impact on climate change beyond regional borders.
Despite environmental concerns, the landfill also serves a dual purpose. Since 2007, it has been capturing methane to generate biogas, which powers a local power station. This process offers a cleaner energy solution, helping to reduce greenhouse emissions equivalent to nearly 2 million cars annually.
Calls for improved waste management are growing. Experts emphasize the need for systems that better separate and process organic waste, potentially through anaerobic digestion or composting, to minimize bad odors and environmental impact.
