In a stirring critique, Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President N Ramchander Rao has chastised Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for her refusal to step down as Chief Minister following the party's defeat in the recent elections. Rao condemned Banerjee's actions, asserting they demean the people's verdict and endanger the nation's democratic framework.

Speaking to ANI, Rao remarked, "Mamata Didi's insistence on retaining her position is an affront to the people's choice and democratic integrity. According to the Constitution, Article 172 limits the CM's term to five years, while Article 164 permits the Governor to appoint a new CM. Banerjee's stance trivializes her constitutional role; the election outcome reflects the public mandate." BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan echoed these sentiments, slamming Banerjee's persistence as a "willful repudiation of democratic ideals."

Kesavan accused Banerjee of subverting constitutional norms and violating public trust, describing her actions as "deliberate misconduct that affronts our democratic ethos." He characterized her comments as indicative of a despotic mindset, asserting, "Mamata Banerjee's remarks reveal her authoritarian tendencies, mirroring a decade and a half of anarchic governance, which is why West Bengal voters ousted her." Kesavan further emphasized that Banerjee's authority to remain in office expired with the assembly's term.

"It is known that the assembly's tenure concluded on May 7, leaving Mamata Banerjee with no constitutional claim to continue," he noted. Banerjee, however, remained defiant, alleging Election Commission and BJP manipulation. Despite TMC's reduced assembly presence, she proclaimed, "We didn’t lose; our moral victory stands." The election results, which saw the BJP's formidable gain of 207 seats, contrast with TMC's diminished 80-seat hold, reflecting a significant shift in Bengal's political dynamics.
