The Amma Canteens, a vital initiative of Tamil Nadu, are set to receive a significant makeover as Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has directed officials to enhance the infrastructure at these facilities. The goal is to ensure that quality, hygienic, and palatable food is available to the public.

Originally inaugurated on February 24, 2013, by then CM J Jayalalithaa, the canteens were established to tackle hunger and malnutrition by offering heavily subsidised meals to various vulnerable groups, including the working class and low-income families. Despite criticisms of reduced funding under previous administrations, the canteens continued operations.

Following reports of unsatisfactory food quality, CM Vijay organized a review meeting where officials were tasked with upgrading amenities and securing necessary cooking equipment. The Amma Canteens have played a pivotal role, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing meals to stranded individuals, including migrant workers.
