In a landmark event for India's infrastructure development, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, was present at the breakthrough ceremony of the Zojila Tunnel. This 13.15-kilometre engineering marvel is set to become the longest bi-directional road tunnel in Asia, as its final wall of rock was ceremoniously excavated.
The tunnel, which promises all-weather connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, is halfway through construction and is set to be fully commissioned by 2028. This strategic project is not only pivotal for defense logistics but is also anticipated to significantly boost tourism, allowing year-round access to Ladakh's scenic landscapes and winter sports opportunities.
Located at an elevation of 11,578 feet, this tunnel represents a major engineering feat at a cost of Rs 6,500 crore, spearheaded by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. Its completion marks the end of seasonal isolations of the Ladakh region, supporting local economic growth, and offering improved, safer access for residents and tourists alike.
