The White House said it was restricting travel from Brazil to the United States, two days after the South American nation became the world's No. 2 hot spot for coronavirus cases.
DEATHS AND INFECTIONS * More than 5.42 million people have been reported infected with the novel coronavirus globally and 344,052 have died, according to a Reuters tally.
EUROPE
* Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced mutiny in his party and fury across Britain for refusing to sack his closest aide Dominic Cummings, who is accused of flouting lockdown by driving 250 miles from London.
* The number of cases at a Dutch pork processing plant near the German border has jumped to 147 since it was closed last week and workers were asked to go into quarantine.
* The German government is recommending that states ease some social distancing regulations from June 6 but continues to urge that limits be placed on social gatherings, Bild newspaper reported. Cases rose by 289 to 178,570 on Monday.
* Belgium will not return to the strict measures imposed for nearly two months even if there is a second wave, its interior minister said.
* Cases in Russia climbed to 353,427 on Monday, having risen by 8,946 in the past 24 hours.
AMERICAS
* Americans sunbathed on beaches, fished from boats and strolled on boardwalks this holiday weekend, even as the U.S. death toll fast approaches 100,000. * Brazil registered 653 new deaths on Sunday, taking the total fatalities to 22,666.
* Argentina extended a mandatory lockdown in Buenos Aires until June 7 and tightened some movement restrictions, after a steady increase in the city's confirmed coronavirus cases in recent days.
* Mexico's president said the coronavirus could cost as many as a million jobs in the country as many industries considered not essential remain shut.
ASIA-PACIFIC
* China reported 11 new confirmed cases in the mainland as of end-May 24, up from three a day earlier.
* Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan would lift a state of emergency for Tokyo and four remaining areas later in the day but it could be reimposed if infections picked up. Abe said Japan will lift limits on regional travel on June 19, Kyodo news agency reported.
* India on Monday posted its biggest single-day jump in cases, overtaking Iran to become one of the 10 worst-hit nations. The government reopened domestic air travel after a day of "hard negotiations" as some states sought to limit the number of flights.
* Kazakhstan has tightened lockdown measures at its biggest gas condensate field, Karachaganak, after confirming the first coronavirus case among its staff. * Malaysia reported 172 new cases on Monday, most of them foreigners held at immigration depots.
* New Zealand is relaxing curbs on the size of gatherings to 100 people from 10.
MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA
* Finance minister Mohammed al Jadaan said Saudi Arabia's economy is solid and can deal with the coronavirus crisis despite the need to cut spending. * Zambia's information minister said she had tested positive, but was asymptomatic and had gone into self-isolation.
ECONOMIC FALLOUT
* Stocks edged higher on Monday after a survey showed German business morale rebounded in May, boosting optimism around economic reopenings, although caution prompted the dollar to snap a rare losing streak.
* French government measures to prop up the economy through the coronavirus crisis have cost $490 billion, the equivalent of 20% of gross domestic product, the finance minister said.
* Hungary's 2021 budget to be submitted to parliament on Tuesday will contain a nearly $9.34 billion anti-pandemic fund, its finance minister said.
