The Union Health Ministry has reported that 148 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have emerged in the country since June, claiming 59 lives to date.
Chandipura virus, identified in 51 cases, composes a significant portion of these AES instances, the ministry confirmed on Thursday.
Gujarat is the hardest hit, with 140 cases spread across 24 districts, followed by smaller numbers in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
The outbreak's progression has been closely monitored, with joint reviews conducted by various health bodies including the Director General of Health Services and the ICMR.
The ministry highlighted a declining trend in new cases since mid-July, thanks to measures like insecticidal spraying and medical sensitization efforts launched in Gujarat.
To further curb the disease, a National Joint Outbreak Response Team has been deployed, and a joint advisory is being issued to guide neighboring states.
Chandipura virus, largely affecting children under 15, is transmitted by vectors such as sand flies and ticks. There is no specific treatment, emphasizing the importance of vector control and early medical intervention.
