Foreign tourist arrivals in Portugal surged by 5.3% to a record-breaking 2.3 million in August, making it the busiest summer season on record, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Tourists from Spain led this influx, followed by France, Britain, and the United States. Cumulatively, the first eight months of 2024 saw a 6.7% rise, bringing the total to 13.1 million, underscoring tourism's crucial role in Portugal's economy.

Although lucrative, the tourism boom has exacerbated housing market tensions, leading to local protests. Tourism-linked activities accounted for 16.5% of Portugal's GDP last year, reflecting the sector's significant impact on economic growth.
