A parliamentary committee has advocated for the nationwide declaration of cancer as a notifiable disease. This step is essential, they argue, to ensure accurate data collection and effective policy development in combating the growing cancer crisis.

The committee, chaired by Narain Dass Gupta, points to the alarming rate of cancer cases and recommends imposing a high-risk tax on tobacco products to fund cancer research and care. Currently, most cancer data in India comes from the National Cancer Registry Programme, which only covers 18% of the population.

To tackle the disease more robustly, the report also calls for the expansion of medical training programs, making public service mandatory for graduates receiving government aid, and enhancing domestic research and development, particularly targeting environmental carcinogens.
