The Jharkhand Health Department has issued an alert, urging all district civil surgeons to ramp up measures against the Nipah virus following confirmed cases in neighboring West Bengal. Despite no confirmed cases in Jharkhand, officials warned about risks from people traveling from affected areas.
The highly infectious Nipah virus, which boasts a high mortality rate, is primarily transmitted from bats to humans and animals. The disease can be contracted through consuming contaminated fruits or date palm sap, or close contact with infected individuals. Health officials emphasized vigilance and precautionary steps.
Districts are advised to heighten screening, especially for arrivals from affected regions, to mitigate outbreak risks. The advisory mandates immediate reporting of suspected cases to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and strict infection control in healthcare settings. Public advisories include avoiding fallen fruits, raw date palm sap, and prompt medical attention for symptoms.
