Heartfelt Initiative: Screening 6,000 Children in Kashmir for Cardiac Health

The initiative, part of the Gauri Koul Foundation, leverages mobile clinics to provide critical screenings, aiming to enhance children's healthcare and identify congenital conditions in remote areas.

A pioneering initiative is unfolding in Kashmir where a cardiologist is on a mission to screen over 6,000 school students for early signs of heart disease. The 'School Heart Screening Project,' spearheaded by Prof Upendra Koul, is striving to prevent misdiagnosis and ensure proper treatment for children with potential cardiac issues.

Under the aegis of the Gauri Koul Foundation, named after Koul’s mother, the project is actively engaged in three districts: Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam. The team, with government approval, is visiting schools to conduct vital screenings for students aged 5 to 15. These screenings are crucial for catching conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The initiative also collaborates with Dr. Abid Hussain, among others, to provide comprehensive on-site cardiology assessments. This effort has already shown positive outcomes, such as the disappearance of Rheumatic Heart Disease in screened areas, alongside life-changing interventions for cases like a girl's bradycardia, wrongly treated as epilepsy prior to this project.
