Rwanda gets a new facility to improve medical services for disabilities

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities in association with Rwanda Biomedical Centre has recently welcomed a new facility. It (the new facility) is intended to improve medical services for people with disabilities.

The facility is part of Gahini Rehabilitation Centre, located in Gahini Sector, Kayonza District that was constructed in association with the Gahini Anglican Diocese and a German organization, Christian Blind Mission. According to the officials, the cost involved in the complex's construction stands around Rwf 1.5 billion, while new equipment cost Rwf 750 million. The new medical centre comprises of 46 rooms for inpatients including six VIP rooms, as reported by The New Times.

So far, with the existence of smaller centre for decades, they were importing artificial human limbs. Now, with the introduction of new facility, the high-quality prosthetics will be produced, which are later expected to be exporting. Speciality services like orthopaedic laboratory, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, orthopaedic surgery, client hostels, laundry, kitchen and woodwork services are also included.

The management of the centre will discuss how medical students can be trained from the facility and people with disability will get prosthetics, which they have been lacking.
