The NATO Secretary General has condemned the attack on former U.S. President Donald Trump at his Pennsylvania campaign rally, asserting that political violence has no place in democracies. Jens Stoltenberg expressed his shock on social media, empathizing with Trump and the affected individuals, and reiterated NATO Allies' commitment to defending democratic values.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken also voiced their condemnation of the incident. Austin, relieved by Trump's safety, called the act an appalling incident, while Blinken echoed President Biden's view that political violence is unacceptable in America. The incident saw Trump's rally in Butler interrupted by gunfire, leading to a fatality among the attendees and injuries to others, as reported by CNN.
The FBI has identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and is conducting an ongoing investigation. FBI agents are scrutinizing the security protocols and how the gunman accessed the rally. Pennsylvania State Police indicated that lessons would be drawn for future security improvements.
