Pakistan's Commerce Ministry has set an ambitious target to double its exports to USD 60 billion within the next three years. However, current economic data does not support such optimistic growth, according to a report by Dawn. In order to reach its goal, Pakistan will need to increase its sales abroad by 25 to 30 percent within the specified timeframe.

The country aims to attract major investments in the industry and agriculture sectors to boost production. Yet, there is no evidence to suggest that these investments will materialize soon, added the report. A 'stagnant export graph' has historically plagued Pakistan's economy for decades.

While exports have seen only minimal increases, the nation continues to grapple with high fuel prices, fluctuating global demand, and domestic policy shifts that hinder substantial economic growth, as reported by Dawn. An earlier report noted that the Pakistani government faces significant financial challenges amid economic uncertainties and rising inflation.

Government borrowing in the first 11 months of the outgoing fiscal year surpassed combined figures of the previous two fiscal years, reaching PKR 7.39 trillion from July 2023 to June 7, 2024. Bankers estimate that total borrowings for FY24 could hit PKR 8 trillion by June 30, driven by high spending and slashed development budgets.

The fiscal budget document for FY2023-24 indicates domestic debt servicing will cost PKR 7.21 trillion, with another PKR 1.04 trillion allocated for foreign debt servicing. This figure is expected to rise to PKR 9.77 trillion in FY25. (ANI)
