FORMER MALDIVIAN DEFENCE MINISTER HAILS RENEWED INDIA-MALDIVES RELATIONS

By Ayushi Agarwal

The former Maldivian defence minister, Mariya Didi, has highlighted a significant shift in the island nation's approach to its bilateral relationship with India. Reflecting on recent comments by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who thanked the Indian government for assisting in debt repayment, Didi stressed the importance of this development in fostering trust and goodwill between the two nations.

'I believe this would be a huge confidence-building measure on both sides and would clear any doubts anyone had ever held regarding the goodwill of the bilateral relationship of our two friendly nations,' said Didi in an interview with ANI on Monday. President Muizzu, addressing the Independence Day function on July 26, praised his administration's diplomatic achievements and expressed gratitude to both India and China for their support in easing the Maldives' debt burden, which has bolstered its economic sovereignty.

The reconciliatory tone adopted by President Muizzu marks a departure from previous diplomatic strains, including his own 'India Out' campaign rhetoric. Didi pointed out that Muizzu, who had previously accused India of compromising Maldivian sovereignty by alleging the presence of Indian troops, is now acknowledging the critical role of strong bilateral ties.

'It is good to see that Muizzu is now coming to his senses and realizing how important a good bilateral relationship between the two friendly neighbours is,' Didi remarked. She also urged Muizzu to openly address his previous assumptions on compromised sovereignty to eliminate any lingering doubts among the Maldivian public.

Diplomatic tensions peaked when derogatory remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by three Maldivian deputy ministers led to a major diplomatic row. The subsequent suspension of these officials highlighted the severity of the incident. However, the recent positive developments indicate a renewed commitment to cooperation and mutual respect between the two nations.
