President Droupadi Murmu, during discussions with Timor-Leste's President Jose Ramos-Horta, underscored India's philosophy of considering the whole world as one family, emphasizing the global acceptance of Indians due to their hard work and trustworthiness. She highlighted the widespread participation of the Indian diaspora in various sectors, attributing their success to ancestral teachings.
'We believe the whole world is a family. We believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' President Murmu stated. 'Indians are affectionate and integrate seamlessly everywhere. They are welcomed globally for their diligence, humility, and trustworthiness. The Indian diaspora excels in business, education, and politics, reflecting our ancestors' teachings on inclusiveness,' she added.
President Murmu also stressed the critical role of women's progress in societal development, highlighting efforts to empower women through self-help groups. 'Women constitute around 50% of the world's population. Their progress is essential for the advancement of families, societies, and nations. In India, we have established self-help groups to foster financial independence among women,' she noted.
Addressing India's unity amid diversity, Murmu highlighted the nation's belief in 'Unity in Diversity' and the respect for its Constitution and elected representatives. 'India is a vast nation with immense cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity, yet we remain united. Our strong Constitution and cultural respect for elected officials underscore our collective unity,' she said.
President Murmu was awarded the Grand-Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the highest civilian honor of the country, for her public service, dedication to education, social welfare, and women's empowerment. This marks the second highest civilian award she has received during her tenure, following the 'Companion of the Order of Fiji' from Fiji.
Reflecting on the accolade, Murmu affirmed that the honor symbolizes the strong ties of friendship between India and Timor-Leste. She had earlier arrived in Timor-Leste after her visits to Fiji and New Zealand.
