An investigation has uncovered that a collection of cryptocurrency-focused accounts on the platform X is bolstering messages linked to Chinese state-backed initiatives. These efforts, part of a wider disinformation campaign termed 'Spamouflage,' aim to shape narratives beneficial to China on key global issues, according to Voice of America.
VOA Mandarin, alongside Taiwan-based analytics firm DoubleThink Lab, identified over 1,000 bot-operated accounts suspected of propagating Chinese interests. These accounts mimic genuine information sources, yet work to elevate their clients' online presence, suggesting a concerted strategy to sway conversations in the West.
Major cryptocurrency profiles like ChainGPT and LondonRealTV, reportedly managed by British podcaster Brian Rose, have interacted with these contentious Spamouflage accounts. One particular account, Watermelon Cloth, was known for its pro-China, anti-West rhetoric before being suspended. This operation uses social media to disseminate Chinese propaganda and critique Western policies, aiming to alter global perceptions.
