Pakistan's National Assembly Opposition leader and top Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) figure, Omar Ayub Khan, has been indicted by an anti-terrorism court in Sargodha over alleged involvement in an attack on the Mainwali judicial complex. Judge Muhammad Naeem also charged Punjab Assembly's Opposition leader, Malik Ahmad Khan Bachar, with similar counts. This legal proceeding marks a significant development as the court summons witnesses, with the next hearing scheduled for February 28.
Overall, 57 individuals have been named in the case, according to police reports. The indictment follows a separate action where a similar court in Faisalabad issued non-bailable warrants against Ayub Khan and other senior PTI figures, including Senate Opposition leader Shibli. These warrants stemmed from accusations of inciting riots on May 9, alongside previously unheeded court summons.
The allegations, including setting a police vehicle ablaze, come as PTI faces growing accusations of orchestrating unrest. Pakistan's caretaker and current government, along with the Pakistan Democratic Movement, have pointed fingers at the party for orchestrating violence. In contrast, PTI has defended its stance, labeling the charges as baseless. This latest indictment adds to the list of challenges for PTI, whose leaders, including founder Imran Khan, are embroiled in legal challenges linked to the May 9 incidents, involving attacks on military installations.
