In a landmark agreement likely to impact future relations, Israel and Hamas have reached a deal involving the exchange of four Israeli hostages' bodies for the release of 602 Palestinian security prisoners. The move, reported by The Times of Israel, is expected to resolve a deadlock threatening a multi-phase ceasefire.
Hamas confirmed that the arrangement addresses previous delays in prisoner releases and includes the simultaneous handover of Israeli prisoners' bodies. Additionally, an equivalent number of Palestinian women and children will be freed. The exchange is to occur through Egypt, with possible delays, as noted by Israeli officials.
Israel's previous refusal to proceed stemmed from claims of Hamas' agreement violations, including propaganda-laden ceremonies and the status of the Bibas family members' remains. As phase one of the ceasefire nears its end, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit Israel to foster further negotiations, aiming to extend hostilities' cessation and facilitate more hostage releases.
