On October 17, the Chinese government confirmed the expulsion of nine high-ranking People's Liberation Army (PLA) members from the Communist Party, an unexpected move coming just before the Central Committee's Fourth Plenum begins on October 20. These expulsions are part of President Xi Jinping's stringent campaign against corruption within the military ranks.

The most notable figure among those dismissed is He Weidong, former vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, making him a significant player in the PLA's command structure. Other expelled officials include major figures from various military departments, highlighting a substantial shake-up aimed at rooting out corruption and consolidating control over the military factions.

According to Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, investigations revealed severe violations of party discipline and duty-related crimes by the expelled officials. Xi's strategic purges aim to reinforce his authority over the party and military while maintaining China's focus on modernizing its armed forces, crucial for its projected dominance over regions like Taiwan and the South China Sea.
