Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oman on Wednesday, marking the final stage of his ambitious three-nation tour following significant visits to Jordan and Ethiopia. Earlier, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali bestowed a remarkable gesture by personally driving PM Modi to the airport for his onward journey to Oman.
Abiy expressed hopes for future meetings, emphasizing enduring connections rooted in historical, cultural, and diplomatic links between the nations. Upon invitation by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Modi's visit aims to bolster the Strategic Partnership and expand commercial and economic collaboration.
The Oman visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Oman, following Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's state visit to India in December 2023. Modi is also scheduled to engage with the Indian diaspora, marking his second visit to the Gulf nation, with comprehensive dialogues planned on trade, investment, energy, defense, and more.
In Ethiopia, Modi's first visit to the East African nation signaled a historic elevation of ties to a 'Strategic Partnership'. Extensive discussions resulted in multiple Memoranda of Understanding across various sectors, including UN Peacekeeping Operations, customs collaboration, and technological advancements.
Further initiatives included debt restructuring, increased cultural scholarships, AI education for Ethiopians, and healthcare collaboration, highlighting a focus on mutual growth and regional stability. Modi addressed the Ethiopian Parliament, designating both countries as 'natural partners' for regional peace and connectivity.
His engagements in Ethiopia culminated with the conferral of The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, planting a sapling under a joint ecological initiative, symbolizing a commitment to sustainability and bilateral growth.
