In a move to enhance security for the upcoming general elections and a public referendum, Bangladesh has suspended its Visa on Arrival (VoA) services from January 15 to February 15. This marks a significant shift as it affects travelers from neighboring countries, notably Bhutan and Nepal, who normally enjoy the on-arrival visa facilities.
A senior government official hinted that the decision is strategically aligned with electoral preparations, particularly to prevent potential violence during the intense election campaign period, which is set to kick off on January 22. Past election periods witnessed similar suspensions to maintain order during political rallies across the nation.
Further intensifying security measures, the government has already deployed military forces throughout the country, arming them with magisterial powers to establish security checkpoints. Visa issuance from key Bangladeshi missions in India is also on hold until the completion of the elections and referendum on February 12. Police forces remain on high alert as part of the comprehensive security strategy.
