New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, has confirmed that a government plane will depart for New Caledonia within the hour, marking the start of a series of flights aimed at bringing New Zealanders home. This urgent initiative comes in response to the recent challenging circumstances faced by New Zealanders in New Caledonia.

"New Zealanders in New Caledonia have faced a challenging few days, and bringing them home has been an urgent priority for the Government," Peters stated. He expressed gratitude for the support of the authorities in Paris and Nouméa in facilitating the flight.

Peters highlighted that the situation in New Caledonia remains fluid, and New Zealand officials are actively coordinating with French counterparts and other partners, particularly Australia, to ensure the safety of their citizens. Additional flights are planned in the coming days, organized in cooperation with France and Australia.

The first flight will carry approximately 50 passengers from Nouméa to Auckland, prioritizing those with the most pressing needs. Consular staff will determine the priority for passengers on subsequent flights.
